Yoshinoya’s Flavorful Century Bangus Kabayaki

Century Bangus in Pack (available in groceries)

Century Bangus in Pack (available in groceries)

When Yoshinoya invited us to a bloggers’ dinner a few weeks ago to taste their newest addition to the menu, I did not expect much.

But when the Century Bangus Kabayaki was presented at Century Culinary Circle in Ortigas, I was pleasantly surprised.

Century Bangus Kabayaki

Specifically the belly part, the Century brand of bangus is lightly breaded and deep-fried. I also like the fact that the bangus belly serving is large enough, just right for the whole rice bowl.

Complementing the soft flesh of the bangus, it is glazed with a special Unagi-like kabayaki sauce which gives it the flavorful aroma and savory taste.

Kabayaki is the Japanese term that refers to filleted/deboned seafood dish dipped in a sweet soy-based sauce and grilled.

The other dish is the Shrimp Katsu which is basically a deep-fried and breaded shrimp patty. The Shrimp Katsu pair I got comes with mixed vegetables and priced at P140. However, it came off too ordinary for me. I’d rather recommend you to get the Shrimp Katsu with Beef Bowl for just an additional P45 ( P185).

Back to Century Bangus Kabayaki

At P140, the Century Bangus Kabayaki meal comes with rice and bean sprouts. I always consume a minimal amount of rice as a personal weight-watch regimen. But with the Century Bangus Kabayaki, I was able to finish the whole bowl. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tip: Although the bangus is deboned, it is not 100% boneless, eat it slowly and watch out for small bones. ๐Ÿ™‚

Piolo Pascual or not, I highly recommend this new Yoshinoya offering. ๐Ÿ™‚ You have to try it soon because this will only last in Yoshonoya branches unitl mid-May 2011. Century Bangus Kabayaki is also fit for the upcoming Lenten season.

Yummy Food Editor Rachelle Santos

Yummy Food Editor Rachelle Santos

It was the latest Yummy Magazine Cooking Demo, and this time, it was held at Landmark in Trinoma Mall a few weeks ago.

Yummy shared some of their secret recipes through Yummy Food Editor Rachelle Santos who was the head chef for that day.

Rachelle focused on easy-to-prepare everyday meals that involved the use of bangus (milk fish) in the dishes particularly using Sarangani Bay Prime Bangus.

Inspired from the Yummy Magazine September issue, the cooking demo by-products were:

Crispy Bangus Belly Strips

Tinapa with Eggplant and Sun-dried Tomato Pasta, Crispy Bangus Belly Strips with Caper Mayo, Bangus Belly with Tausi, and Spice-Marinated Sarangani Bangus Belly Fillets.

The event was brief as preparation of the dishes was quite fast since these were easy-to-prepare dishes. And of course, guests and the audience including NomNom were able to have a tasting feast of the prepared dishes.

My Yummy Adventure: Tinapa Rice with Salted Eggs and Tomatoes, Or Is It?

Yummy Magazine May Issue

Yummy Magazine May Issue

Aside from regularly checking out www.yummy.ph, this month’s Yummy Magazine issue is one of my favorite as it featured “easy to cook” dishes.

Lazy as I am, I found a truly easy one in the “Quick and Easy” section – Tinapa Rice with Salted Eggs and Tomatoes. I thought this would be a good one for my entry in their bloggers’ contest as well. I had one problem though, we don’t have tinapa (smoked fish) at home.

It was for Sunday dinner and I don’t have time to buy so I was forced to look for a substitute. I came up with a great idea for a substitute, Bangus Fried Bangus!

I also consulted some friends online (specifically in social networking site Plurk) and they approved of my tinapa substitute. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Some Garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 Cup of white rice
  • pinch of salt
  • minute dash of pepper
  • 1 red egg, peeled and sliced into eights
  • 1 tomato, sliced into six

Procedure:

  1. Debone the Bangus and fry. Flake afterwards
  2. In a large wok, heat the oil and fry the garlic until lightly browned. Add the cooked rice, salt, and pepper and stir together.
  3. Add and mix the flaked bangus strips and stir well. Remove from the heat.
  4. To serve, pour the rice into a serving bowl and top with salted eggs and tomatoes

Thankfully, my cooking escapade was a success! My Tinapa Bangus Rice with Salted Eggs and Tomatoes tasted great (if not better than with tinapa). :)ร‚ย  And that concludes My SundayYummy Adventure!
