I haven’t visited Mercato Centrale (the day market) since it started, but I was able to check out Midnight Mercato first with other blogger friends last weekend. This is defiintely for night people like me who can’t wake up early on weekend mornings. 🙂
Chilled/Hot Taho by Tahooo!
It was also the launching night of Midnight Mercato at the Bonifacio Global City last Friday so there was a simple opening ceremony, ribbon-cutting, guests, and the likes.
Briefly to the unaware, Midnight Mercato is a weekend late night food bazaar where foodies and barkadas can hanging out and enjoy great food you can’t easily find otherwise. You can feast on a wide array of food choices from gourmet selections to ‘lutong bahay‘ (home cooked) dishes; even sosyal street food and balut included. Add to that acoustic musical performances by Rock Ed – all in an air-conditioned ‘kubol.’ Yes, that is Tagalog for ‘tent’ (as fellow blogger Alex shared).
Here are some food trip photos I’m sharing from:
Buy 1 take 1 Sausages @ P150 and Chips To Go Booth (similar to Potato Loops)
Monster Burger & the Monster Burger Challenge (finish it in 4 minutes and it's FREE!)
Nutsylicious have different kinds of nuts including walnuts and pistachios!
After all the photos, it’s my tummy’s turn. So I got an authentic shawarma (P75) from a Mediterranean-looking guy whose booth I forgot, three Mochiko mochi ice cream, and some Takoyaki balls.
Mochiko Mochi Ice Cream @ P70
Mochiko had a very long line and was out of stock before 12midnight. That speaks for itself. 🙂
I also had a set of Armenian Lavosh Chips with Pesto Mozarella Cheese dip (P145) from the stall with a witty name of ‘5 loaves and 2 Fishes.’
Armenian Lavosh Chips (right); Claypot Chicken Rice (left)
Big Bob's Quarter Pounder Burgers
I also got a bottle of Raw Honey and Organic Gourmet Rice from ‘Fresh Start‘. They’re quite pricey actually but I know mom would love the brown rice while I use the honey as sugar substitute in my morning milk (there goes the revelation). 🙂
Fresh Start Organic Gourmet Rice (Brown Rice P200) & Raw Honey (P300)
There were a number of media outfits and got to spot some celebrities including Mara’s Mom in ‘Mara Clara‘ , Ashlee Gosengfiao, Sarah Meier (I think), Mercato Centrale guy RJ Ledesma, and others. I also spotted Anton Diaz and wife Rachel at the Human Nature booth.
Rachel @ Human Nature booth (right); Mexican Kitchen (left)
Balut (Duck Embryo)
I wanted to try so much more but I can only take in so much having come from a full dinner at Rai-Rai Ken a few minutes before going to Mercato Centrale.
There were also other food finds which caught NomNom’s fancy and instantly became a favorite.
Watch out for that post coming out next week including my predictable Mochiko review. 🙂
It was a haven of grilled food, hamburgers, and suasages outside the Midnight Mercato Tent.
Moreover, I got some tips from foodie friends and is looking forward to try the following in my next visits:
Off Beat Burger‘s Krispy Kreme Burger, Ravioli’s of Natalia, and the Angus Beef Tapa Rice Toppings, among others.
Krispy Kreme Burger
I also got news from Antin Diaz’s blog that Bale Dutung will start tonight @ Midnight Mercato! I’ll have to wait a little longer though as I will be going to Thunderbird’s Resort in Rizal tonight and I’ll be at the Pyromusical competition in SM Mall of Asia tomorrow.
Check out more about Midnight Mercato and Mercato Centrale here.

Bloggers take role as Cupcake Bakers
I attended a pre-Valentine blogger event courtesy of Max’s Corner Bakery last night. Max’s highlighted their Valentine edition cupcakes and other bakery products.
The main activity of the event was a demonstration of how to make cupcakes. The bloggers were then encouraged to participate in crafting their own cupcake creations with Max’s own cupcake-making ingredients such as icings and multi-colored sprinkles
Max's Event Hosts
I believe everyone enjoyed the activities and prizes; blogger Glenn was later on awarded as the one with the best Cupcake Design and Dedication. 🙂
It is also sweet to note that husband and wife blogger Jeff & Jen were celebrating their 14th-year anniversary as a couple on the same day. <3

On Max’s Corner Bakery Cupcakes
Formerly known as ‘Max’s Bakeshop‘ of Max’s Restaurant, Max’s Corner Bakery is proud to say that their cupcakes are made with the same ingredients they use for their cakes.
And indeed, after tasting their chocolate variant and vanilla cupcakes, it was undeniably good.
The cupcakes come in six variants namely Cream Cheese, Choco Espresso, Choco Caramel, Double Chocolate, Choco Strawberry, and Troubador (Custard Cake).
I love the Double Chocolate best among all. Nomnomonom.
Blogger-Designed Cupcakes 🙂
Perhaps most of us are only familiar with Max’s Caramel bar. There are also other products in the bakeshop which include Max’s Ensaymada, chocolate chiffon cake w/ chocolate fudge icing, banana cakes, food for the gods, caramel cream cakes, and colorful rolls.
Other Bakery / Bakeshop Products like Max's Caramel Bar & Ensaymada
When it comes to rolls, I purchase from the usual leading bakeshops so I haven’t tried theirs. Maybe soon. I’m curious as to how it is at par with the other leading bakeshops. 🙂
Valentine Promotions
In recognition of the Valentine season, Max’s Corner Bakery has recently launched specially garnished valentine-cupcakes with eye-candy layers of sweet confections for the sweet-toothed customers.

They ares also having a promo where for a minimum purchase of P1,500 from February 12 to February 14, Max’s diners will receive a box of chocolates for free to make you feel the ‘sarap kapiling‘ tagline. This is valid for dine-in, take-out or delivery.
January 4th, 2011 — Appetizer, Ayala Triangle Gardens, Casual, Cravings, Cuisine, Dessert, Makati, New Brews, Quick Service, Restaurants, Sweet Shops, Vietnamese, Where To Eat
The Ayala Triangle Gardens was then just a garden behind the business-heavy Makati Stock Exchange within the Makati Central Business District. But in the recent months, Ayala Land developed it further and now morphed into a leisure park complemented with a line of restaurants and dining places to enjoy – chat with a friend, nourish oneself after a healthy jog, or simply binge to your heart’s content. 🙂
Ayala Triangle Gardens
And indeed, I got the chance to somewhat ‘binge‘ a few weeks ago with friends. This was actually my second time at the Ayala Triangle Gardens. My first was a dinner of authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice at the famous Wee Nam Kee from Singapore. And after that night, I swore to be back and try the other restaurants.
And so it was. This time, I made sure I came earlier, which was in the afternoon.
Banapple
Similar to a famous food blog, dessert comes first. We took it the other way around and first indulged in Banapple. Aside from the usual Banapple Pie, we also had their in-season cake – Banana Starry-berry Custard Cheesecake.
Banapple
BonChon Original Chicken
Next stop was Bon Chon. We got a small order each of the Korean chicken wings in soy garlic (non-spicy) and of course, the ‘Hot & Spicy one. They took care of the latter while I feasted on the former.
BonChon Chicken
A small order of 6pcs. cost P185 while a medium order (12pcs) is P365. They also have drumsticks, chicken combo and chicken chops. In any variant, you’ll love the different crunch of the interestingly-breaded chicken skin.
Pho 24
It’s Vietnamese food, and I am most delighted with the traditional Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup served to us. Complete with condiments served on the side, it included beansprout (taw-ge) and lemon slices, among others. The soup was both filling and internally refreshing as common in most oriental soup.
PHO 24
If you want to make it more exciting to taste, you can also add some Sriracha Hot Chili sauce by the table side.
* Expect a dedicated blog post on what else we had on each of my Banapple, BonChon, and Pho24 experiences. 🙂
Almost all the restaurants offered an open al fresco dining experience facing the greens of Ayala Triangle Gardens.
MOMO Cafe & CBTL Soon!
Chef Laudico's BFast
Other restaurants include Amici, Cara Mia, Omakase, and Chef Laudico’s Bfast for an all-day breakfast menu. There were some shops which are stilll under construction though. But it won’t be long before we can try Momo Café, my darling Kanin Club, C.B.D., and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL).
Golden Spoon
Next on my restaurant list when I come back at the Ayala Triangle Gardens is Golden Spoon for their frozen yogurt delights. I’ll be bringing a ‘golden fork‘ to complete the pair. 🙂
December 4th, 2010 — Affairs, Beverage, Casual, Coffee Shops, Cravings, Dessert, Promos / Events, Restaurants, Sweet Shops
Today, Starbucks marks its 13th year of presence in the Philippines. Its first branch of Starbucks in the Philippines opened December 4, 1997 at 6750 Ayala Building in Makati City.
The 1997 opening of Starbucks in the Philippines was significant as it became the third market to open outside of North America.
The Starbucks experience has since spread throughout the Philippines. In fact, it’s first branch in Mindanao has opened just last month in the province of Cagayan De Oro (CDO). Starbucks continues to innovate with new concoctions and products such as their latest introduction of the Starbucks VIA Brew instant coffee. They have also released their Starbucks Planner 2011. They are also having the rounds for their Christmas Starbucks Cheers Party around the Philippines.
And as a Starbucks treat to it’s loyal customers, all branches of Starbucks in the Philippines are giving away complimentary cupcakes to it’s first 50 customers in each branch today. Happy Anniversary Starbucks!

It’s Christmas! And NomNom Club starts it with Starbucks Christmas Cheers Party!
Starbucks Cheers Party
The Starbucks Christmas-themed beverages and Starbucks Christmas-themed food items are back! Last November 3, 2010, the 6750 branch in Makati held the first Starbucks Cheers Party this year for their loyal customers and patrons from 6-8pm.
Starbucks Peppermint Mocha
Starbucks Christmas Beverages
We enjoyed sample servings of Toffee Nut Latte, Praline Mocha, and Peppermint Mocha.
If you miss the Christmassy feeling, try the Peppermint Mocha. The minty aftertaste, rich chocolate, smooth espresso and velvety steamed milk would reassure you of the season’s atmosphere. It is topped with whipped cream and red sugar sprinkles.
Starbucks Toffee Nut Latte
The Toffee Nut Latte on the other hand has the buttery flavor of sweet toffee combined with toasted nuts.
Also blended with smooth espresso and steamed milk, it is topped with whipped cream and toffee-flavored sprinkles.
Praline Mocha is similarly prepared but accented by hazelnut syrup and topped with mocha sauce drizzle.
My favorites though are Toffee Nut Latte and Praline Mocha; in that order.
Starbucks Christmas Red Cups
Starbucks Coupons
Similar to last year, guests were given Cheer Party cards with coupons. It has a raffle stub, planner promo card, photo booth pic, 10%off on Starbucks merchandise / Starbucks VIA ReadyBrew, and a complimentary tall beverage.
Acapella Manila
Although I did not win in the raffle draws, I got to taste a wide array of the Starbucks Christmas-themed food items while the Acapella Manila choir serenaded us with popular Christmas songs.
Here are photos of Starbucks guests and friends in the recent Starbucks Christmas Cheers Party:

November 1st, 2010 — Appetizer, Beverage, Casual, Cravings, Cuisine, Fusion, Greenhills, Japanese, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Restaurants, SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, Sweet Shops, Tomas Morato, Where To Eat, Wilson
I first saw Bubble Tea when they opened their first branch in SM Megamall in Ortigas. Through the years, Bubble Tea proved to maintain its quality amid competition using authentic, natural, and freshly shaken premium milk tea in contrast to powder-based fads. Eventually, other branches came about in SM North Edsa and Timog. And later this month, they will be opening their newest branch with a function room along Wilson St. in Greenhills.
Bubble Tea's Black Sesame Milkshake
It was only recently that I began to appreciate their other servings of Tokyo-inspired Japanese dishes and some Japanese-Western fusion including pasta, burgers, and sandwiches.
In line with new discoveries, I ventured out from my usual Bubble Tea favorites such as the Royal Milk Tea and Taro Milkshake when I visited their branch in Timog with some foodie friends.
Egg Pudding Add-on for Bubble Tea Milkshakes
I initially got to sample a small serving of the Azuki Red Bean Milk Shake and was extremely satisfied. For a change, the red bean flavor was different, to say the least. It was a welcome respite from the usual sweet milkshakes. Moreover, it provided a unique texture to taste because of the red beans.
I also saw a new flavor in their table menu – the Honey Dew Melon with mango bits available in both milk tea or shake. But I ordered the Black Sesame Milkshake for curiosity’s sake. It was my first to try this one and similarly, it was not too sweet and of course, had the black sesame flavor. It was a good choice.
Milkshakes are priced at P135 for medium size and P145 for large. Milk Tea are at P115 (medium) and P125 (large). Hot milk tea is at P80. Other flavors include Japanese Green Tea, Almond, Coconut, Double Chocolate, Mocha, and Jasmin (I’d like to try this next). For an additional P20, you can have add-ons which include extra-bubbles (big/small/combi), vanilla ice cream, and the egg-pudding which you goy to try out. I really love chewing on their soft firm bubbles (sago/tapioca), I go for the big bubble add-ons. 🙂
Bubble Tea Japanese Food
Now for the dishes. It was a fiesta of comfort foods in Bubble Tea. With servings big enough to share, it seems like the photos came right out of the Japanese menu and landed in our tables where no empty space were left.
Okonomiyaki Japanese Pizza
Japanese Ceasar Salad
Tonkaktsu Omurice Bubble Tea
Beef Stew Curry
The dishes we tried out include Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pizza – P125), Japanese Ceasar Salad (Ceasar salad with Fried Chicken – P195), Tonkaktsu Omurice (Breaded Pork & Omelette – P265), Beef Stew Curry (Jap style sliced beef stew w/ sweet and mild spicy curry, rice, & egg – P265), and Takoyaki (P175).
Takoyaki : grilled octopus-filled balls made of pancake batter, topped with mayonnaise, katsuobushi and sweet soy sauce.
Pasta
Tori Pesto Spaghetti
Spicy Mix Seafood Tomato Spaghetti
We got to try out two pasta dishes. The first is Spicy Mix Seafood & Tomato Spaghetti ( P295) which has salmon, tuna, squid, prawn, clam and mussel.
The second is Tori Pesto Spaghetti (P265) which is pan-fried Chicken w/ pesto cream sauce.
Maki Sushi
Nippon Ebi
It flooded with maki and sushi such as Nippon Ebi (P285), Unagi Lover (P295), and Vancouver (P285). The latter is made with breaded prawn and spicy tuna in teriyaki sauce.
Another home-developed sushi is Bubble Salad Sushi (P165) which is a mini mixed salad topped with sushi rice. On the rightmost of the four photos is the Spicy Tuna (P195).
They have combination platters in case you want to have a try of each.

Recommendations
But among the myriad of choices, there were five which greatly satisfied my tastebuds (in reverse order of preference).
Salmon Foil Yaki (P345)
Salmon Foil Yaki
The tender fish meat of the steamed salmon fillet gave it away with its freshness retained by the wrapping in foil. Surprisingly, it also had a mildly sweet twist.
Chicken Teriyaki Doria (P245)
Chicken Teriyaki Doria
It’s baked casserole rice covered with melted cheese. Topped with grilled boneless chicken and teriyaki sauce, this dish is sure to fill you up.
Aspara Bacon Yaki (P185)
Asparagus Bacon Yaki
It’s a skewer of grilled asparagus wrapped with bacon and cheese on top. Bacon and Cheese is love; no need for further explanation. 🙂 The asparagus is the healthy angle to reduce your guilt in exchange for this pleasure.
Japanese Fried Chicken
Tofu Steak (P165) [Top Photo]
Light, fresh, and soft. Those are the three adjectives befitting this small simple dish called Tofu Steak.
Lightly breaded and mixed with sweet sauce and vegetables, this soft, melt-in-your-mouth and warmly served tofu is my perfect appetizer.
Japanese Fried Chicken in a Basket (P385)
Actually, I am surprised as much as you are that a common friend chicken dish ended up on top of my recommended list.
I did not expect much when I took a bite of the leg portion. But the taste and crispiness, albeit with almost nil bread crumbs, was fantastic.
Aside from the quality of the chicken itself, I would say the cook have a certain style in cooking this thin-skinned fried chicken to maintain such level of crispiness and juiciness in the white meat.
Perhaps more than just deep-frying it to perfection.
With only four pieces, it may also be dismissed as expensive at P385. But this juicy Japanese fried chicken served with noi ginger sauce and japanese potato salad sidings is very much worth it.
