Philippine Holidays 2011 and Filipinos’ Festive Spirit

NomNom Club deliciously welcomes the new year of 2011! With the Filipinos’ festive spirit that is inclined to celebrate every occasion there is – be it a birthday, anniversary, fiesta, or even a simple Philippine Holiday – we find it fitting to share this year’s calendar of Philippine Holidays 2011 to our readers.

Moreover, a Filipino celebration is never complete without a feast. From a single dish and softdrink (soda) shared by the family to as much as filling the whole dining table with food; even inviting the closest neighbors or the whole neighborhood. NomNom Club itself never run out of occasions to celebrate. We had NomNom Club 1st Anniversary with Greenwich, Thanksgiving Party with Angel’s, and a Christmas Party with Kraft Eden. What a 2010 that was! 🙂

Perhaps we’ll come up with a list of Philippine Festivals / Philippine Fiestas soon as well. 🙂

Here’s your list / calendar of Philippine Holidays 2011 :

January    01 – New Year’s Day (Saturday)
February   25 – Edsa Revolution Anniversary (Fri) **
April       09 – Araw ng Kagitingan (Sat)
April       21 – Maundy Thursday (Holy Week)
April       22 – Good Friday (Holy Week)
May        01 – Labor Day (Sun)
June       12 -  Independence Day (Sun)
August    21 – Ninoy Aquino Day (Sun) *
August    29 – National Heroes Day (last Monday of Aug)
November 01 – All Saints Day (Tue) *
November 30 – Bonifacio Day (Wed)
December 25 – Christmas Day (Sun)
December 30 – Rizal Day (Fri)
December 31 – Last Day of the Year (Sat)*

All are regular Philippine holidays unless indicated otherwise.
** Feb 25 is a special holiday for all schools only.
* special non-working days

Holidays for Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha are yet to be announced due to its nature. I hope October 31, 2011 (the Monday before November 1) and Decemebr 24, 2011 would also have been made a holiday since it is sandwiched between weekends and major holidays.

As much as we like to include NomNom Club activities in the calendar / list, of course, we can’t.  (LOL) Anyhow, set your foodie recipes and list of dishes to prepare in accordance with the upcoming Philippine Holidays 2011 you will be celebrating. 🙂

Sarap ng Pasko & NomNom Foodie Club Christmas Party

It was NomNom Foodie Club‘s first ever Christmas party! It was held last December 1, 2010 in SM Mall of Asia at Kraft‘s Sarap ng Pasko Christmas platform near SM IMAX. Food and venue sponsor was Kraft Eden Cheese and made possible with GeiserMaclang.

NomNom Club Christmas Party

NomNom Club Christmas Party

I wasn’t really planning to have a Christmas party for the foodie club this year since we just celebrated NomNom Club’s first anniversary with Greenwich last August and a thanksgiving party last October when NomNom Club won in the Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010. However, when Kraft started their “Sarap ng Pasko” campaign, I thought it was a very fitting theme for the foodie club Christmas party since it was about food and Christmas as well. And hence, through GeiserMaclang, the proposal for Kraft Eden went through.

To share what transpired in the event, I believe the best way to narrate is through visual photos which shows how much the participants – NomNom Foodie Club members and guests – enjoyed the event. 🙂

Traditional Exchange Gift

We first had dinner and some socialization among the members and guests. it was followed by the exchange-gift-giving where each one of the attendees were required to bring a P50 simple gift. It was drawn similar to a raffle system. The best gift within the prize range of P50 was also given an extra prize.

It was followed by the main raffle where Samsung donated the major raffle prize -  Samsung Microwave Oven. Other prize donors included GeiserMaclang for the Havaianas slippers, and Angel’s Pizza Pasta for the gift certificates. Major winners were Ms. Joy Ramos who won the top prize and Ms. Ryan Joson who got the Havs slippers. Other raffle items included a Sunpiology Piolo Pascual Planner for 2011, gift certificates, and branded tokens.

Round 2 of Raffle Draw

Because I wanted everyone not to go home empty-handed, I brought around 50 raffle prizes for  the online registrants which reached about 50 as well, but since the actual attendees were only about 40, the excess prizes were given away on a raffle draw round 2. So some got two raffle prizes. 🙂

In closing, GeiserMaclang had a message of thanks for the crowd and gave away Manny PacquiaoAlaxan shirts to everyone for pickup at their Makati office. I also thanked everyone for a fruitful year and revealed NomNom’s plans for 2011 including a paid subdomain service (ie: jenjen.nomnomclub.com) which includes a number of free services for the clients. We are also targeting for a food tour for summer or the second year anniversary.

CDO Holiday Ham on Our Noche Buena Tonight

It’s Christmas Eve! Aside from the usual excitement for gifts that we’ll be giving and receiving, another highlight of the Filipino Christmas eve is the Christmas Noche Buena. And this year, we’ll be having a CDO Holiday Ham on our table tonight.

Christmas Ham

Christmas Ham

I always look forward to the Noche Buena because, aside from Buena Noche, it’s actually a rare opportunity to eat a full meal during midnight with the whole family.

Although, we’re not having a Lechon pizza, we do include the traditional ham in our Noche Buena set but it’s usually just the regular ham.

Last month,  I got invited by CDO on their media event of CDO Holiday Whole Meat Premium-Cut Ham. Chef Rob Pecson also joined us and demonstrated how to come up with salads and Christmas dishes using the CDO Holiday Ham.

CDO Holiday Ham

It also gave me the opportunity to know more about Christmas hams and what makes CDO hams different from the others in the market. While there are a number of meat brands we are familiar with, CDO Holiday Ham’s premium-cut ham has:

– no extenders
– high-quality smoked ham
– one whole boneless meat from the hind leg

Chef Rob Pecson and the CDO Holiday Ham

It turns out that meat from the hind leg is the best cut of pork for hams, is tastier, and meatier.

Furthermore, the net marks of CDO Holiday Ham means they are whole-meat hams because only whole meat hams can be smoked in ham nets. Otherwise, pieces would fall off.

It would also be best to consume the whole ham in a few days after the ham has been opened; even if kept in the freezer.

Have a Merry Noche Buena Christmas with CDO Holiday Ham everyone! Nomnomnom….:)

And the Starbucks Planner 2011 Winners are…

Thank you all for participating in this year’s Starbucks Planner 2011 Giveaway Contests. First on the writing contest, and next on the FB photo-comment contest. 🙂

Pardon the slight delay in the announcement as I had to validate and filter for the unique comments in the photo entries in which one even had an awesome 1,029 comments. On the other hand, reading through your Christmas stories with the theme of ‘sharing‘ was also heartwarming. Many entries were very creative as well.

I also invited Sebs Yu from  Marriage Journeys blogsite to be a co-judge in the “Share Your Stories.”. So we averaged our scores and came up with the winner based on the criteria.

Share Your Stories Winner

Starbucks Share Your Stories

Starbucks Share Your Stories

Without further adieu, the winner of the the Share Your Stories writing contest with an average score of 88.5% is “Thinking April” with her blog post entitles “Last Christmas.” It was her personal story of sharing and letting go of old things albeit with sentimental value. Congratulations! You will receive a Starbucks 2011 Planner soon!

Following her in second and third place with a tie score of 84.5% are “Sharing  This Christmas Season” from Make Melodies and Snicker Ho Hum.

Photo-Comment Winner

Starbucks FB Photo-Comment Winner

Starbucks FB Photo-Comment Winner

And for the Photo-Comment entries, the greatest number of comments we had was 1,029. But since we are looking for the unique number of comments, we had to validate and trim them down.

The winner, who had originally 146 comments, and after validation was filtered to 110 unique comment entries is the photo by Jian Marla Reyes. Congratulations! You also receive a Starbucks 2011 Planner!

In second and third places are Krismer Acuesta who had 78 unique comments out of 298 and Joanne Garces Gonzales with 71 unique comments out of 1, 029. (all values include the +5 in comment to Digital Manila)

Thank you to all for participating! The two winners will get an FB message and/or email to get their snail mail addresses where the Starbucks 2011 Planner will be sent by Starbucks.

As a gesture of appreciation, I would like to invite the Top 3 Share Your Stories winners and Top 3 Photo-Comment winners to a simple merienda gathering at Spuds (Potato Corner brand) at the Ayala Columns condominium in front of RCBC bldg in Makati at the intersection of Buendia and Ayala Ave on 2pm of December 28, 2010. Kindy email me at admin AT NomNomClub.com to RSVP. Thanks! I’m off to Batangas tonight and will be offline until then. Will be back in Manila on Dec 26. Expect my email replies after that date. 🙂

Pizza Hut’s Lechon Pizza is Deadly Delicious

Pwede na akong mamatay” is a local euphemism which literally  means “I can die now.” Indeed, after you have tasted Pizza Hut’s Lechon Pizza, you could say that without hesitation, especially if you know you are going to Heaven. And well, because your cholesterol shoots up double time. 🙂

Pizza consumption by itself is one  the West’s strongest influence in modern Filipino food culture. The number of competing brands alone speaks for its itself.

The varieties also testify the market’s complex taste and preference of their own pizza. You have the thick, the thin, the stuffed, the pop-ups, and the top thats.

On the other hand, the “Lechon” (roasted suckling pig) is a major food centerpiece for big gatherings, fiestas and celebrations here in the Philippines.

I never thought the day that the lechon and the pizza would meet can actually happen. But Pizza Hut did it. Pizza Hut dared and successfully combined the goodness and crispiness of lechon and the quality of their pizza.

Lechon Pizza Slice

Lechon Pizza Slice

Think of Pizza Hut layered with generous cheese with chunks of lechon meat and slices of the sought-after crispy lechon skin and you have your deadly but delicious Pizza Hut’s Lechon Pizza.

The skin is not the traditional shiny lechon skin but more of the fried and crunchy. Good thing I liked it more this way. Pizza Hut intentionally air dried the skin separately and adds it as topping on top of the pizza only as it is served. This allows the lechon skin to maintain its crispiness.

Your initial temptation is to pick the crispy lechon skin atop the pizza slice and eat it by itself. But that might  leave your pizza lacking as a whole. I prefer to hold my guns and consume it altogether and experience the crispy lechon skin as I take one bite at a time of the lechon pizza. 🙂

You could also request for the sauce to be held and not immediately spread on top of the pizza as served. Although the lechon pizza sauce is still on the sweet side, it is not as much as your retail favorite Mang Tomas lechon sauce. This can either be good or bad on a person-to-person basis. 🙂

Manila Signature Dishes

Hold that saliva from dropping. The Pizza Hut’s Lechon Pizza comes in two sizes – medium and large.  The Lechon Pizza price starts at Php 329 for the former with 10 inches and Php 499 for the latter of 14 inches.

You can also have it as part of a special package under the Manila Signature Dishes where it is paired with  other servings and wine for the price of P799.

Inspired by the popular local favorite, this new flavor celebrates the Filipino creativity and ingenuity.

Manila Sugnature Dishes 2010:
Pizza Hut Bistro New Lechon Pizza Set P799 (Price still subject to service charge and local tax)

  • Medium Lechon Pizza
  • Seafood Supremo
  • Olive Garden Salad
  • 2 Glasses Casillero del Diablo Merlot

It has the rustic burnt lechon aroma you can smell from afar as it comes nearer your table. It is an ultimate dream come true for pizza and lechon lovers. Have the best of both in a single serve. You should not let this ultimate foodie comfort food pass this Christmas holiday season as it is only available until about the end of January next year.

Pizza Hut Lechon Pizza

Pizza Hut Lechon Pizza

I recommend the Pizza Hut Lechon Pizza with a thumbs up for those who love pizza and lechon. Be sure to bring family and friends to share it with as  I myself was only able to consume 3 slices. Try one before you die, it’s Pizza Hut Lechon Pizza or forever hold your peace. 🙂

Starbucks in the Philipppines turn 13 Today

Today, Starbucks marks its 13th year of presence in the Philippines. Its first branch of Starbucks in the Philippines opened December 4, 1997 at 6750 Ayala Building in Makati City.

The 1997 opening of Starbucks in the Philippines was significant as it became the third market to open outside of  North America.

The Starbucks experience has since spread throughout the Philippines. In fact, it’s first branch in Mindanao has opened just last month in the province of Cagayan De Oro (CDO).  Starbucks continues to innovate with new concoctions and products such as their latest introduction of the Starbucks VIA Brew instant coffee. They have also released their Starbucks Planner 2011. They are also having the rounds for their Christmas Starbucks Cheers Party around the Philippines.

And as a Starbucks treat to it’s loyal customers, all branches of Starbucks in the Philippines are giving away complimentary cupcakes to it’s first 50 customers in each branch today. Happy Anniversary Starbucks!
