Flavors of Independence

As Filipinos, we’ve been used to drinks and juices largely based on western flavors. Our staple beverages include orange juice, iced tea, and other foreign flavors.

It’s no surprise as we are much influenced by western culture having the USA play a big part in our not-so-distant national history.

But in a recent iconic day – our 119th Philippine Independence Day – I discovered a number of very Filipino flavors introduced by our very own Filipino company NutriAsia found in a very interesting and colorful foodtruck referred to as Joy Ride!, last June 12, Independence Day, at Rizal Park in Manila.

Beyond just a day of national pride, it was also a day for Filipino foodies as savory and delectable Filipino comfort food with a twist took center stage at the “NutriAsia Joy Ride!” food truck festival.

Here, I discovered the “LOCALLY” bottled juice drink which featured very Filipino flavors from locally sourced Pinoy fruits which you don’t see too often in ready-to-drink juices including mangosteen, guyabano, kamiascalamansi, dalandan and tamarindI have yet to try the other flavors but the Mangosteen rocks!

Moreover, the Joy Ride! food truck serves reimagined Filipino comfort food using quality NutriAsia products, including Adoburrito, Siga Bagnet Wrap, classic fried chicken, and the crunchy and irresistible Skinny Chix.

The Adoburrito, a wrap combination of the popular adobo and burrito, is prepared using Datu Puti’s adobo series, wherein the iconic Filipino dish is turned into a handy burrito wrap. It is actually a dish popular in the Visayas with a choice of Spicy Adobo and Humba Adobo.

On the other hand, the Pinoy Chicken Slider is served with pan de sal and the Siga Bagnet Wrap, which is prepared using Mang Tomas Siga, a spicy version of the regular Mang Tomas sauce. It also has Datu Puti vinegar and cucumber to give it a kick.

Lastly, the crowd favorite Skinny Chix, is street food made crunchier and more flavorful by using NutriAsia’s recently launched, first-in-the-market Golden Fiesta Big Crunch Fry and Shake, a breading mix in smoked barbeque, cheese, and sour cream variants.

Cooking by Gala Stars Culinary School

The reimagined Filipino comfort food being served by NutriAsia Joy Ride! food truck is prepared by no less than chefs from Gala Stars Culinary School in partnership with Chef Ernest Reynoso Gala, one of the youngest and most renowned chefs in the country.

The chef appreciates the fact that the leading condiments brand in the Philippines offers well-known products like Datu Puti and Mang Tomas, and that its excellent pre-mixes make cooking a lot easier, especially for harried homemakers.
