Good Ol’ American Food With Robert Mondavi’s Wine at the Oakroom

The Oakroom International Restaurant is located at the 6th level of Oakwood Premier Joy Nostalg Center in Ortigas and it’s a haven for culinary cravings spearheaded by Chef Jerome Cartailler.

From November 7-27, 2011 Oakroom together with the US Department of Agriculture and Robert Mondavi Wines will hold the Great American Taste Festival where in you will be able to taste the richness of good old American cuisine paired with the right wine from no less than the winery of Napa Valley’s finest, Robert Mondavi.

For most Filipinos, wine is reserved for special occasions and pairing it with food is a rare indulgence but as culinary experts start to ease us to the goodness of proper wine pairing, many Filipinos embrace wine as part of their meal. Did you know that a glass or two of red wine a day will do your body wonders? Of course, moderation is still key to a healthy lifestyle.

Let’s learn a few tips on how to taste wine:

How to Taste Wine

  • Sight: Tilt glass against a white backdrop. Describe the color.
  • Aroma: Swirl the wine to aid in the wine’s exposure to oxygen.
Put your nose into it and smell, while tilting the wine closer to your nose. What do you smell?
  • Taste: Is the wine sweet or dry? Is it crisp, giving the wine “acidity”? Do you detect oak in the wine? Do you detect “tannins” in the wine (absent in whites, present in reds at different levels). Do you detect fruit in the wine? If so, what type of fruit (tropical, red, blue, other)? Do you pick up some other flavors, such as vanilla, toffee or chocolate? Remember, this is not pass/fail, so don’t be afraid to be creative!
  • Body: Is the wine light and crisp, smooth and medium-bodied or rich and full-bodied?

As for pairing wine with your food, don’t be afraid to do trial and error. Wine is an experience, what tastes good to you might not be the case for another. For Robert Mondavi, food and wine pairing is pretty simple, “Drink what you like and like what you drink.”

You will never go wrong with the basics of food and wine pairing:  red wine with beef, white wine with chicken. Now, when you’re adventurous enough, try the other excellent choices at Robert Mondavi’s Woodbridge Wine Collection.

So if you’re celebrating something special this month, try Oakroom’s Great American Taste Fest and experience the richness and the smoothness of the Robert Mondavi wines. The fest is open starting November 7 until November 27, 2011.
