The Legacy of Kamuning Bakery

When we talk about legacy, we pertain to something handed down from a distant past, even possibly from an ancestor. This is the kind of nostalgia you would get by visiting Kamuning Bakery along the corner of Judge Jimenez and K-1st streets in Kamuning, Quezon City.

It is a relatively small bakery with a story dating back as as old as 1939 which makes it 75- years old as of this writing. It is considered as the oldest authentic pugon (wood-fire oven) bakery and the very first bakery to open in Quezon City, Philippines.

Pugon Baked Goodness

Beyond nostalgia, it is Kamuning Bakery‘s pugon-based practices which gives its name and products the sought-after quality its customers have enjoyed throughout the decades. In contrast to modern-day processing of mass-produced factory breads, pugon baking means breads are made without using preservatives and additives.

If you’re not from the area of Kamuning, the bakery might sound new to you, actually. It’s because the bakery has maintained a low profile catering only to customers in their neighborhood. NomNom Club itself only discovered this spot early this year because of our friend and new owner Wilson Lee Flores who introduced us to their products when he sent some home as a gift last holiday.

We were able to try their all-time bestsellers fist-sized pan de suelo, oatmeal cookies, and foccasia sticks. We had them for breakfast and loved all of them specially the pan de suelo which is made of flour, sugar, vegetable lard, salt, and yeast.

This piqued our curiosity further which led us to check out the place for ourselves. So, we visited their branch a few months ago, bought some baked goodies, and dined there as well.

We ordered a usual Filipino favorite called Cheese Bread, my wife’s favorite Cinnamon Bread, and their famous egg pie. We also ordered a chocolate drink to go with the three.

Surely, we will be back to try their other creations such as the famous Brazo de Mercedes, strawberry cheesecake, ensaymada, and biscocho.

If time allows, let us add to that the pianono, pan de coco, the unique pan de Rizal, and pan de ciosa to complete the set. 🙂

New Development

At the time we visited, the bakery shop was expanding with one of its side being constructed. The sales lady said it was being prepared for an air-conditioned portion of the shop. It is most probably done by now.

It’s good to know that an old bakery is also adopting to the changing times and moving towards a direction to cater to other market segments as well.

Before we left, my wife and I took the opportunity to pose on their famous wall where Wilson Lee Flores‘s guest usually gets photographed – with the photos of the bakery owners’ children; albeit a little creepy. 😛

As a couple, we are not that old yet but we can still remember living through the 80’s so our young age did’t exempt us from some nostalgia as well. Dining at Kamuning Bakery was indeed a reminiscent trip down memory lane. And of course, good food and good pugon-baked breads too!
