“Taste the Love” with The Bistro Group

Jalapenos and more!

Jalapenos and more!

No, this is not an advance Valentine’s Day post. It has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day, actually. 🙂 The Bistro Group of restaurants, known for their international and casual dining brands, has just launched their latest campaign called “Taste the Love.”

Taste the Love is not a promo per se, it’s about inviting diners to taste the love behind their every restaurant concept launched. The campaign celebrates a series of milestones for The Bistro Group including:

  • the opening of 50 restaurants spread across the 12 resto concepts
  • the appointment of Corporate Chef Josh Boutwood
  • the launch of its Premiere Card.

Modern Shanghai is one of the four freshest name in the group which brings authentic recipes in a homey environment. Village Tavern, Watami, and Ma Maison, completes the group having come from the US and Japan ( for the latter two).

The Bistro Group of restaurants is composed of TGI Friday’s, Italianni’s, Fish & Co., Flapjacks, Pig Out!, Krazy Garlik, The Stock Market, Bulgogi Brothers , and the previously mentioned restaurants.

But within the 1st quarter if 2013, expect the US-based Chuck E. Cheese’s to be the 13th as it opens at the New Glorietta soon.

Together with the arrival of Chef Boutwood is the launch of new dishes as well. Among the favorites in the list are Sesame Teriyaki Chicken Wings, the Fully Loaded Sweet Potato Skins (Village Tavern), and the a la carte Katsu Menu (Ma Maison). NomNom Club‘s favorite is the Black Pizza (black due to the squid ink mixed with the dough), also from Village Tavern.

“Taste the Love is not just about food. It’s about the heart and the passion that goes into everything we do, from our concepts to our locations to our service to of course, our food… we allow our customers to taste the love from the moment they get hungry and think about our restaurants to the time they have polished off every bite,” says Lisa Ronquillo, AVP Marketing of The Bistro Group.

Taste the Love‘ from all the Bistro Group of Restaurants starting this 2013! I wonder what other upcoming deals, menu items, and treats they will dish out soon?

New Find: Citrus Restaurant & Deli

It was a quick trip from SM Megamall to Julia Vargas corner Meralco Avenue going to Renaissance Condominium. After parking, we found ourselves at its 2nd floor inside Citrus Restaurant & Deli upon invitation of the owner through common friend.

The interiors of Citrus Restaurant was classical-posh but laid back. If you value your privacy,  a quaint location as such is great.

Citrus Restaurant and Deli

Interestingly, they also have an exclusive second floor with a mock-up fireplace that also serves a wine cellar for expensive wines ranging in the hundreds of thousands.

Citrus House Specialties

Now for the food. More than the usual tapas, I highly recommend their house specialties Jaunita’s Callos and Lengua with mashed potatoes which is surprisingly affordable at P259 and P200++ only, respectively.

Juanita's Callos

The callos was flavorful and cooked just right as if it was done by a lovely chef mom at home. The lengua was tender and exceeded my expectations.

The food was served without unnecessary fancy decorations either but I noticed the elegant and irregularly shaped white plates fit for the 2-person serving dish.

Citrus Main Dishes

From their main dishes, we got to try the Pan-Fried Fish ala Vera Cruz. Quite a long name, but it was no disappointment either at only P199.

This was followed by the Spaghetti Bolognese (P199) and a double-sized thin-crust pizza. I also shared a Vanilla milkshake with my fiance who loves anything sweet. 😛

Finally, some baked potato chips and a delectable Panna Cotta (top photo) concluded our dinner affair. I thought I was already used to the low prices but the P59 panna cotta was simply unexpected.

They also have a P999 promo offering 1 bottle of wine + all you can eat tapas-tapas. Or the Drink All You Can Jack Daniel’s for P949. Night chillers can also get free tapas-tapas for every 10 bottles of beer.

If you’re looking for an eclectic flair that would match your tapas, they have live bands playing with a different concept every night of the week.

They open up as early as 7am and offers breakfast, salad, and a wide range of pizza collection. Beverage range include soda and juices starting at P40 and P60, respectively. Beer starts at P50.

Aside from great food, I highly recommend Citrus Restaurant as a very ideal place for dating with its intimate and sophisticated ambiance; not to mention the friendly prices for guys on a tight budget. 🙂

I definitely have to be back at Citrus Restaurant soon and try more of their new world cuisines on the menu; perhaps at the wine cellar on the 2nd level next.

Boodle Feast at Blackbeard’s Seafood Island

Happy New Year everyone! We’re starting the year with a bang and a fight! A Boodle fight that is!

Boodle Feast

Panlasang Pinoy Boodle Feast

Honestly, the idea of a Boodle Feast was foreign to me. So when Blackbeard’s Seafood Island invited NomNom Club for their Robinsons Magnolia Mall opening launch weeks ago, the curious cat in me immediately said ‘yes‘.

On it’s 8th year in the restaurant industry, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island (BSI) is staying true and strong to what they are known for – the Boodle Feast. It was a first for me to try on a Boodle Feast. It is characterized by eating directly from one big banana leaf with boodle trays where the food is served with minimal utensils because you are expected to eat with your bare hands. Although I was a bit late for the gathering, I took on the Boodle food gracefully and ate slowly while trying on the different kinds of seafood in the Boodle set. Although I have yet to be acquainted more with the practice, the food was satisfactory.

Blackbeard’s Seafood Island

Boodle Feasts Sets

I also came to know that there are actually 15 boodle feasts sets to choose from. The servings can either be for a SMALL group of 3-4 persons or the BIG one for a family of 5 to 6 hungry individuals. The 15 Boodle Feast sets are:

  • Magellan’s Landing (P965/P1250) – with danggit chips, kinilaw na tanigue, grilled tilapia, grilled squid, grilled shrimp, steamed crabs, chicken inasal, grilled talong and bagoong rice.
  • Panlasang Pinoy (P875/P1365) – Hipon sa aligue, Sinuglaw, Ginataang Alimango, Adobong Manok, Kare-kareng gulay, ensalatang lato with crispy dilis and plain rice.

  • Fiesta Bicolandia (P765/P1150) – Halaan sa buco, pork BBQ, Ensaladang talong, Bicol express, Ginataang Alimango, Laing, Grilled Tilapia with Bagoong Rice.
  • Tali Beach (P965/P1299) – grilled chicken, inasal, BBQ, steamed white shrimps, grilled tilapia, grilled tahong, crabs, grilled squid, grilled tomatoes, lato, mangoes, watermelon with steamed rice.

Other boodle feasts are Dagupan’s Pride, Dapitan’s Pride (I am Ninoy), Boracay’s Feast, Mt. Apo, Davao Gulf, Chang’s China Chow, Vigan, Kanyaman, Shabu Shabu (Grand Binalot) and Luau.

Cucina Andare: First Philippine Food Truck Market

Top Food Blogger Anton Diaz on Cucina Andare

Top Food Blogger Anton Diaz at the Cucina Andare Opening

We often visualize trucks as big nasty vehicles on the road. The nearest I could associate it with food are the fruit-delivery trucks from the provinces or the ones used by caterers and big restaurants.

But the Philippine foodie scene just got better as the group behind Mercato Centrale night market, led by Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet and author/celebrity RJ Ledsema, brings the US concept of food trucks to the Philippines. Hence, Cucina Andare was born two nights ago.

Just in time for the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, the Cucina Andare food truck market is located at the Glorietta Park in front of Greenbelt 3, Landmark, and Makati Shangri-La Hotel. It will be open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 4pm3am for the whole of December which started Last December 14, 2012.

It brings together specialty and gourmet food trucks, new and innovative food, drink and pastry vendors from home-based food businesses from around Makati plus some live acoustic performances.

“The food truck is a staple in the American foodie scene…There are now popular gourmet food trucks in San Francisco, New York and Australia, and people follow them wherever they go. We believe it’s about time that food trucks make their debut in the Philippine foodie scene,” shares top food blogger Anton Diaz.

They also launched the Food Truck Association of the Philippines during the opening of the market to encourage more food trucks vendors and related innovative ideas. I think this is the start of a new niche in the Philippine food retail industry.

And what did NomNom Club do there? What else but to eat! And here are our TOP FINDS from the first Philippine food truck market :

My Top 4 Watami Dishes ( SM Mall of Asia)

Watami Salad

Watami Salad

Watami is now in the Philippines and I missed their opening day blow out at SM Mall of Asia (MOA)  last November 16, 2012 where customers enjoyed half-off their total bill (50% off)! So I did not let this chance pass when blogger-friend Spanky invited us over for lunch.

Watami Teas

New Watami Teas

Watami is a famous Japanese casual restaurant in Japan with 700 branches in their country alone. They are also in Hongkong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, among others.

It was a good and filling Japanese lunch and here are the 4 Top Watami dishes NomNom Club highly recommends among those we have tried:

  1. Beef and Kimchi Rice in Stone Pot

Beef and Kimchi Rice in Stone Pot (P245)

Beef and Kimchi Rice in Stone Pot (P245)

  2. Sapporo Seafood Ramen Salad (Top Photo – P375)
  3. Salmon & Vegetable in Rice Paper

  4. Beef Rice Bowl with Hot Spring Egg in Tokyo Style

Beef Rice Bowl with Hot Spring Egg in Tokyo Style (P195)

Beef Rice Bowl with Hot Spring Egg in Tokyo Style (P195)

All four were great-tasting and not too heavy on the budget. I must admit there are some items on the Watami menu which is priced above-average for a ‘casual’ restaurant. On the other hand, the premium pricing is reflected in the quality of service the customer can get. The taste is also authentic Japanese.

We also had the Self-Grilled Short Ribs (P295) and Assorted Sashimi (5 kinds). For beverage, I tried Kiwi Tea with Agar.

I also look forward to ordering the Clams cooked in stone pot with Japanese style sauce (P285) and the Watami Salad is my next visit.

Aside from SM Mall of Asia, Watami is also opening soon at the new Glorietta – also known as the new Glorietta Vibe.

Chic-Boy + Mang Inasal = Floring’s BBQ Grill

You might mistaken quick-serve restaurant Floring’s BBQ and Grill for Chic-Boy if you will just look at the menu offerings and the price range it lists. Add to that the Paa and Pecho dishes with unlimited rice mark and you might think you are at Mang Inasal.

Floring's BBQ & Grill

Floring's BBQ & Grill

Three weeks standing Floring’s BBQ and Grill, along the 4th and 31st avenue of Fort Bonifacio, opened up as an affordable alternative for Fort Bonifacio office goers that seemed to get inspiration from more established restaurants Chic-Boy and Mang Inasal.

Recommended Dishes

I got to try some of it’s dishes for the first time during lunch and it was generally a good experience. The interior is clean and colorful fit for a glaring grill house.

I would have to recommend their Crispy Chicken which you can also get as a meal called Chicken-Tastic with a choice of Paa or Pecho for only P99 with plain rice or P120 with Java Rice. Add P22 and get a softdrink or iced tea as well. It reminds me of Max’s fried chicken. 😛

Floring's Cripy Chicken : Paa or Pecho

Floring's Cripy Chicken : Paa or Pecho

A complete good meal with drink for a total of P142 (if Java Rice) may be a little above the budget of a regular office worker but if you consider the location and it’s neighboring restaurants, this is already ok (don’t forget the unlimited rice).

The second dish I give a thumbs up is their Bangus Sisig at P140 (Top Photo). The serving size might be short for two persons but the taste makes up for it.

Chef Florabel Co-Yatco did a great job on these two from those I have tried.

Needs Improvement

Ensaladang talong

Ensaladang talong

Pork Ensaladang Talong (P60) was also good but the serving is smaller than that of the photo in the menu.

The Halo-halo (P80) is very good in taste and the ice shaving is better than that of most other restaurants. On the other hand, the P80 price in ratio to the serving size is also above than most/average in the market. I think it’s a bit over-priced.

Lechon Manok

Lechon Manok

I was able to try the Lechon Manok (P165 half /P299 whole) and the 2-pcs Pork BBQ meal similar to Paa/Pecho pricing (P99/P120).

The taste is average and nothing special. I believe it can be made better.

Halo-Halo

Halo-Halo

Next to Order

I checked their  menu and perhaps I’ll try their Morning-Mazing breakfast meals next or the seafood offerings which they also have. Moreso, the bestseller Whole Liempo (P165) and Pork Binagoongan (P99/P120) looks promising.

Considering that Floring’s BBQ Grill have been in operation for only less than a month, I say they are doing a good job and we hope for more improvements in the near future. Number of branches aside, Chic-boy beware! 😛

Relik Tapas: More Than a Bar

Relik Tapas and Bar sounds like ‘something old‘. But if you’ve been there, you’d pleasantly know why it was named such. The red bricks and classic furniture lend that relic and cozy feel.

Relik's Margarita

Relik's Margarita

Relik is not that easy to find, actually. You would extend an extra effort to find it at the second floor of Commercenter Bldg at the corner of 31st avenue and 4th street in Bonifacio Global City amidst all other restaurants visually competing for attention on the street. On the other hand, the restaurant has been getting the raves as a cool hangout place. With the good interiors and atmosphere, I am not surprised.

But this story is not about Relik as a bar. More than that, Relik offers good food.

Together with some foodie friends, we got to experience a mix of Spanish-Mexican tapas-inspired dinner the other day.

Let me share with you those I met that night:

Tasting Board

Tasting Board (P490) - Boneless “Diego Martin”. Chorizo Pamplona, Stuffed “Serpis” Spanish olives and Manchego

Benny’s Certified Angus Ribeye

Benny’s Certified Angus Ribeye (P1150) - a 300g rib eye served with a burnt butter sauce

Relik's Mixed Paella

Relik's Mixed Paella (P820) - serves 8 and is ordered a day in advance

Vanilla and Amaretto Panacotta

Vanilla and Amaretto Panacotta (P160) - cooked cream with a berry compote

If your saliva dripped over those photos, there’s more.

And these are the ones you should not miss and I recommend:

Baked Australian Brie (P530) [Top Photo] – creamy Yarra Valley Brie wrapped in jamon and lightly glazed with honey.

Chorizig

Chorizig (P295) - chorizo bits topped over with Filipino favorite - sisig

Quesadillas

Quesadillas - served with guacamole and tomato salsa. Choice of garlic shrimp, pulled pork, BBQ chicken fillings

Mother Ann’s Braised Ox-Tail

Mother Ann’s Braised Ox-Tail (P450) - slow braised Australian ox- tails served with pomme puree and buttered carrots

Mussels and Chrorizo

Mussels and Chorizo (P330) - green mussels sautéed in garlic cream and Spanish chorizo

Roasted Bone-Marrow

Roasted Bone-Marrow (P290) - topped with gremolata, served with caramelized onions and crunchy bread

I’d also have to give Relic for being able to serve bone-marrow. It’s not a common dish in a restaurant.

Relik is open Monday to Friday from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm – 4:00 am; Saturday to Sunday 5:00 pm – 4:00 am.

Cocktail Mixing 101 at the Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute

This is the first time cocktail mixing will be featured here and it was really quite an interesting experience. The Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute (CTHI) invited NomNom Club late last year to seat in and participate in one of their lifestyle courses entitled Cocktail Mixing 101.

Cocktail Mixing 101

Cocktail Mixing 101

Popular cocktail drinks featured during the seminar were Strawberry Margarita, Frozen Pina Colada, Strawberry Mango Daiquiri Frozen, Mojito, Strawberry Mojito, and Tequila Sunrise. And as expected, we tried all of them! 🙂

Strawberry Margarita

Strawberry Margarita

Strawberry Margarita is a mixture of pureed strawberry, Tequila, lime juice and crushed ice served in a sexy margarita glass.

I personally love the Pina Colada Frozen. It’s a mixture of rum, pina colada mix and crushed ice served in hi-ball glass and garnish with pineapple wedge and straw.

For the Strawberry Mojito, you can use 7 mint leaves, strawberry halved and 2 lime wedges, rum, fresh sour rocks mix, pureed strawberries topped with soda.

The Tequila Sunrise is the easiest to prepare with few ingredients just the Tequila, orange juice and grenadine with orange juice and straw to garnish and serve in a hi-ball glass.
